Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is a desert oasis in Morongo Valley, where groundwater creates cottonwood-willow habitat in the Little San Bernardino Mountains. It is a practical free day-use stop for boardwalk walks, birding, gardens, and trails at the gateway to Sand to Snow National Monument.

An Oasis Made for Birding

This oasis is one of the region’s premier birding sites, with 263 recorded bird species and Important Bird Area designations. Observation decks, a Native Plant Garden, and a Pollinator Garden add places to linger beyond the trail. Saturday bird walks welcome beginners and offer loaner binoculars, while family walks and Science Sunday programs are free public options.

Boardwalks and Trail Choices

An extensive boardwalk, including the Marsh Trail, can be used with wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers. The preserve also has extensive trails, an Education Center, an air-conditioned Nature Center, and trail information at the Zeller Kiosk. Use the on-site lot and bus turnaround to begin, then choose a route that matches your group and mobility needs.

Know the Day-Use Rules

Admission is free and donations are welcomed. This is day use only, with visitors required to leave by sunset; no reservations or permits are needed for a general visit. Dogs are not allowed at all, whether leashed or not. Camping, overnight parking, collecting plants or animals, smoking, bicycles, and motorized vehicles are also not permitted.
