Rancho Mirage Observatory is a free public observatory on the Rancho Mirage Library campus, built beside the library’s western entrance. It invites valley residents and visitors to explore research-level astronomy equipment, daytime tours, and evening programs in a welcoming public setting.

A Close Look at the Cosmos

The main instrument is a PlaneWave Instruments CDK700 telescope, housed inside a 360-degree Ash Dome and paired with an integrated space theater. The observation deck has four telescope workstations and uses smaller Celestron and Lunt solar telescopes. Together, these tools support a close-up introduction to astronomy and observation.

Daytime Tours Made Simple

Daytime tours require no registration: wait in the library lobby and an Observatory Team member will greet you. Tours include indoor and outdoor portions, with only limited seating, and visit spaces such as the Observation Deck, Cosmic Office, and Main Dome. A family-focused tour is offered for younger visitors, with all ages welcome.

Programs and Weather Notes

The observatory offers evening observing programs, lectures, stargazing sessions, and virtual programs for a range of ages and experience levels. Weather matters for the dome: it stays closed in wind or rain, and the automated weather station closes it when conditions worsen. Check ahead if seeing the dome is important to your visit.
