Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center is a trailhead gateway and orientation stop on Highway 74 above Palm Desert. Jointly staffed for the Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service, it helps visitors understand and explore a monument that rises from desert floor to high mountain wilderness.
Stop here for trip-planning help, trail information, and guidance before heading into the monument. Staff can help visitors consider current conditions, including temporary or seasonal restrictions at some recreation sites and shooting areas. The center has no admission posted, making it a practical first stop before choosing an adjacent trail or a broader monument outing.
Interpretive displays cover the monument’s natural and cultural history, while events and programs offer additional ways to learn about the landscape. Adjacent monument trails begin close to the center, placing information and access in the same stop. The nearby Art Smith Trail is one signature route, with scenic but exposed desert hiking.
The monument spans about 280,000 acres and includes the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto wilderness areas. Its terrain reaches 10,834 feet from the desert floor, so conditions can vary greatly across the landscape. If you plan fires on monument lands, campfire permits are required; ask staff which preparations fit your intended route.
Make the visitor center your starting point, then choose a trail or monument route with up-to-date guidance in hand.
