Tahquitz Canyon is one of the most beautiful and culturally significant places on the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Reservation, just minutes from downtown Palm Springs. The canyon trail leads to a seasonal 60-foot waterfall, passing rock art, ancient irrigation channels and native plants and wildlife along the way.

The Hike and the Waterfall

The trail starts at the Tahquitz Canyon Visitor Center and climbs into a rocky canyon at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains. The waterfall is seasonal, so it is at its best after winter and spring rains. Ranger-led interpretive hikes, about two and a half hours long, are included with admission and are the best way to learn the canyon’s history and Cahuilla stories.

Visitor Center

The visitor center has cultural exhibits, displays of artifacts, an observation deck and a small theater showing The Legend of Tahquitz Canyon.

Check Before You Go

From October 1 through July 4 the canyon is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last hikers on the trail at 3:30 p.m. In summer it is open Fridays through Sundays only.
