The desert does the holidays its own way: palm trees wrapped in lights, parades in short sleeves, and theater nights that end with a warm walk down Palm Canyon Drive. Here is what to put on the calendar this season.
WildLights at The Living Desert
The Living Desert in Palm Desert turns its zoo and gardens into a glowing evening walk called WildLights on select nights in late November and December, with light displays, a model train, carousel rides and s’mores fires. Dates sell out, so check the zoo’s website for this year’s nights and book early. Dress warmly. Desert nights get cold fast.
Dec 5: Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade
On the first Saturday in December, illuminated floats and marching bands roll down Palm Canyon Drive from Ramon Road to Tachevah Drive. It is free. Arrive well before dusk to claim curb space.
Two Nutcrackers at the Annenberg
The Annenberg Theater at the Palm Springs Art Museum hosts two holiday ballets this year. Dance with Miss Lindsay’s Nutcracker & Holiday Showcase plays Nov 28 and 29 over Thanksgiving weekend, with a cast of young dancers and a second act of holiday favorites. CK Dance Company marks 30 years of its Nutcracker with performances on Dec 13 and 14, featuring alumni returning for the anniversary.
Dec 22: Palm Springs Pops at the Plaza Theatre
The Palm Springs Pops holiday concert, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, brings carols, pop songs and classics to the historic Plaza Theatre at 7:30 p.m., with guests including the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus and Coachella Valley Classical Voices.
